An online community for Jewish moms
I hate New Year’s resolutions. In fact I hate making promises that I know I will never keep. For those of you who recall Jodi’s weight loss challenge and my pledge to reclaim my body by my 40th birthday. Well that one failed badly. My intentions were good and I thought by making my resolution public it would make me more accountable. Well it did not quite work out that way………
Every year when you wake up on New Year’s Day and log into Facebook , you see everyone’s New Year resolutions. I decided if I make one it needs to be meaningful and something achievable. I saw this quote on someone’s wall and it resonated. Not only is my life a message to the world it’s the message my kids pick up each day.
A while ago I heard a Rabbi speak who deals a lot with troubled teens. He said from experience there are many reasons kids go astray - bad schools, getting involved in bad crowds, family issues. He said that the kids who have family problems are the hardest to deal with and help, the others can be resolved. In spite of what we think and hear about how our kids are influenced by peers or that they spend more hours at school than at home, the reality is this: It is you the mom and the broader family that have the strongest influence on your child’s life.
So if you are going to choose a resolution anyway why not choose this quote “Your life is your message to the world. Make sure its Inspiring” Show your kids your love for life, travel and new experiences. Let them see you as a compassionate, giving and thoughtful person who genuinely cares for the welfare of others. Show them how to be resilient in the face of hardship and the ability to enjoy life’s blessings. Be the model for them that they can learn and emulate.
HAPPY NEW YEAR Imma’s may this year be filled with blessing.
