any ideas for an inexpensive trip w. kids

looking to get away either before school begins, or perhaps delaying till the Columbus Day Weekend in October. Any suggestions for an inexpensive few days with kids? Open to a few hours drive...even a quick flight. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Our kids are 4 & 8.
