Special Needs Heroes: Paving the Way for the Rest of Us

I just watched the most heart-wrenching story on CNN about the disabled in Kenya. It is so sad to see how even in today’s world there are disabled people who are locked up and chained like animals with no access to basic dignities. The families are outcasts because G-d gave them a special needs child.

Take the tragic and horrendous murders of the Fogel family in Israel while they were sleeping. As Jews, we collectively mourned the family and are astounded, outraged and in disbelief that someone can slit a three-month-olds' throat. Palestinians handed out candy and rejoiced.

I hate chesed (kindness) projects

I really hate chesed projects. It's a strong statement and I need to explain that I mean this in the context of special needs kids.



Most yeshivas have a requirement for all eighth graders to complete a chesed project. These kids take on projects including the elderly, the homeless, the hungry and special needs kids. Passion is a drug

As usual I has a busy week...but this last week was exceptionally busy. Each year, for Shabbat Across America, we set up 150 participants at different families for a Shabbat meal and then we all meet up for dessert. It is a great program as people get exposed to families in the community, see Jewish values of kindness and opening your homes to guests in action. Of course, they also experience Shabbat. Many of these families have beautiful apartments and we also have dessert at an amazing home.… Continue
