Have you seen Hanna Rosin's article "A case against breastfeeding?
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200904/case-against-breastfeeding

What are your thoughts? Do you feel chained to your baby? I think my opinion is pretty clear, as I am still fuming weeks after publishing. But I am interested in your opinion...

I never felt chained but I did feel ashamed and frustrated that I couldn't feed them. I do agree with the author that it should be a choice... Even though she mentions her friends that had to pump because of their children's issues, she forgets some of us that WANT to breastfeed but couldn't make enough milk. That part of this article is not particularly kind. I also don't really think this is about breastfeeding per se. It is more about how biology interferes with an egalatarian relationship and that is what the author is rebelling against...

Babies screaming now... gotta go
I plan on nursing my baby. I do have a question though. A few years ago my cousin's baby nurse had really limited her diet, no greens because it would give baby gas, no tomatoes because it could give baby heartbearn. She got to experience the beauty of nursing BUT was really limited in what she could eat! My pregnancy is already limiting my diet due to food aversions, i'd like to think that once the baby is born i can at least eat the things I used to LOVE. What do you think? Should a nursing mother REALLY restrict her diet???
Maral,
usually you can eat everything, but you still have to be careful with alcohol and medicine. Once your milk has come in you should watch your baby for reactions to your food - some babies don't do well with dairy products others with soy etc. But the best is to wait and see what your baby is like. I can eat whatever and my munchkin is okay...

I find it fascinating that this woman (and many like her) think it's perfectly acceptable to kill yourself for your career (working ridiculous hours, pulling all nighters, etc) as many of her mostly male friends from high school and college who hold positions of power, but if a woman sacrifices for her child(ren), she's wasting her time and effort, and, of course, possibly giving up that amazing career. That is so sad for all those children being raised by like minded people.
You actually can take many medications when breastfeeding. And if you can't there is often another option that you can take while breastfeeding. Obviously and for multiple reasons you should get drunk if you are nursing a baby but there is no reason you can't have a glass of wine with dinner or a drink if you go out.
