Remember how much fun you had as a teenager on your Israel teen tour or at camp every summer? Know anyone who wants to have the same great experiences but can't afford to?
My friend Ross Abelow, an officer of United Synagogue, founded the Rita and Lee Abelow Scholarship Fund (the "Abelow Fund") to make sure that under-privileged Jewish teens from the NY Metro area would never be denied the opportunity to go on USY (United Synagogue Youth) teen tours, especially the Israel Pilgrimage summer program. The fund has been able to send almost a dozen children on these programs, and also gives scholarships to three or four children each summer for USY encampment, which is an eight-day camp at the end of the summer held at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. The Abelow Fund was established in memory and honor of his parents, who were both significant supporters of Israel and of USY.
If you know of an under-privileged child who would like to apply for this scholarship and is a member of a conservative synagogue, please let me know and I would be happy to make the connection. Email me at karenwbrooks@gmail.com.
