MetroImma

An online community for Jewish moms

"I love living in New York City--I'm inspired by how every day brings new and exciting experiences," says Karen Brooks, who resides on Manhattan's upper west side. As a freelance writer in fashion, beauty, fitness, travel and other lifestyle areas, Karen has been writing about her life experiences for years. She has interviewed fashion designers (from Oscar de la Renta to Oleg Cassini) and celebrities (from Matt Damon to Sarah Jessica Parker), has traveled the globe from Puerto Rico to Palau writing about honeymoon destinations, worked at major magazines (from Vogue to Lucky to Elite Traveler) and helped launch the mark beauty brand from Avon.

Most recently, she worked as a contributor for AOL StyleList, was the editorial director for Metroimma.com, and wrote the daily deals for jdeal.com. These days, you'll find her posting on her blogs, prettyisprettydoes.com, kidandcaboodleblog.com and stylesuite.wordpress.com, co-chairing the Parent Council at Manhattan Day School, and covering New York Fashion Week every season.

However, all this takes a back seat to her role as a NYC-based Jewish mom. She frequents chess tournaments with her son Harrison, age 5, and gymnastics performances with her daughter Ava, age 4. "I love teaching my kids about being Jewish and practicing the Jewish traditions with them on Shabbat, holidays and every day. It has helped them learn more about their Jewish heritage and helped me grow spirituality as well."

I'm a huge fan of Karen's work, but had no idea how accomplished she was.  She's so humble about all she's done, who's she's met...  I'm so glad I got an opportunity to learn more.

Karen it's so good to get to know more about you. It's really impressive and inspiring, all that you've accomplished! I'd love to meet you one day and possibly do a collaboration. Have fun during Fashion Week, I may run into you ;)

She is also an incredible sister whose example in all areas of life was and is invaluable. My life would have been so much different if she weren't my big sister :) I am extremely grateful...proud...and I love to read about her!

Karen and I have been workout buddies for a while now. Go Equinox!  Karen has such a way with words in person and on paper - they come to life and tell stories in a way that few people can animate their sentences.  I have such an appreciation for Karen and all the work she has done in an industry (multiple industries, really) which are complex and competitive.  She is kind and ethical and it's nice to know that someone so special is being featured here on MetroImma. Great choice!
